Hi, my name is Sam Jones and I am 22 years old and live in Johnsburg, Illinois. I am majoring in graphic design at MCC and have become increasingly more passionate and interested in the industry throughout my time taking classes. In the future, I hope to work for a design company and possibly do freelance work.

Also, a future goal of mine is to become a creative director and head up different design related projects. I would describe myself as a very creative and visionary type of person. I have been enamored with art and creative processes ever since I can remember and over the past few years, I have obtained a lot of knowledge and varying skill sets which have significantly transformed and invigorated me as an artist. Aside from art and design, I am also really into music. I have been a drummer for 13 years, and would consider myself to be quite accomplished. My original ambition was to pursue a music degree, but I see more of a future in the graphic design field.
Drumming
To go further into my drumming, I would say that this is my most intense passion in life. I have always been extremely captivated by music and it is definitely the art form that speaks to me the most. I got my first drum set when I was ten years old and over the ensuing twelve years, I have practiced vigorously to become the absolute best musician I can possibly be. I have been fortunate to play several different styles of music with several different groups. My favorite style to play is metal (which you can probably tell by my pictures), but I also played in jazz band, percussion ensemble, and marching band in high school, as well as with a worship band at a church. In the future, I think it will be cool to play in a metal band that performs at local venues. As I stated previously, graphic design is the career path I want to pursue, but music/drumming has always been an intense interest of mine and I hope to pursue it further in the future.

Art and Design
Before starting at MCC, I was a fairly good artist but would not have considered myself studied by any means. I could do some graphics work and could sketch pretty well, but once I started taking classes, several different abilities that I previously didn’t think possible were unlocked. First off, I became really interested in the Adobe programs such as Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. Through working with these programs, I got really into poster design and logo design and discovered that I have a pretty good knack for it. Next, I began to explore creating with different mediums such as India ink, charcoal, and various paints. The center image below is a piece I did using India ink and I think it came out pretty well as it was my first large piece using that medium. Furthermore, I’ve also gotten really into photography through the two photo classes I’ve taken. At first, I thought taking photos was going to be boring, but I soon found that it was another great form of artistic expression and creativity. Overall, my time here at MCC has been very beneficial and I am excited for what my future holds in these areas.
